First time home buyers (single person who has not owned a primary residence in 3 years prior to closing, if married 3 year test must be passed by both husband and wife) receive a credit (lesser of 10% of sales price or $8,000.) of $8,000 on any purchase over $80,000 before December 1, 2009. If you are going to build the home you must close and occupy it by December 1, 2009. It must be a primary residence but it can be a free standing home, condo, mobile, or even a houseboat. Now there are income limits--married taxpayers get the full credit if their modified adjusted gross income is $150,000 or less.
